Music has been an important part of human life. Music gives people a sense of belonging and provides joy and happiness in their lives. It also helps people to understand the feelings and emotions that they are feeling. As humans, we use music as a way to express who we are as individuals. Malayalam film songs is one such art form which has been used by various religions, cultures and communities for centuries now as a way to spread the message of peace through this beautiful art form which seems simple but is quite complex at the same time. Malayalam films are the films produced in the Malayalam language, mainly in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the most flourishing film industries of India. Apart from films, Malayalam films has given us various other art forms like theatre, art films and television series. The first ever film produced in Malayalam was Vigathakumaran, directed by J C Daniel back in 1932. The first talkie film produced was Balan (1938) directed by S Nottani with his brother George Kinya as the male lead. The first music director for this film was Pendyala Nageswara Rao but he abandoned it after three songs. Later P S Subrahmaniam took over and gave music for the remaining songs. The first film to be fully shot in Malayalam was Chandralekha. The lyricist was Thirunayinaarkurichi Madhavan Nair and the singers were P K Parameswaran Pillai, Kumari Thankam and Pattammal. This film which shows a king hunting a tiger was directed by R T Neelakantan who also sang for this movie! In 2012, a group of youngsters from Northern Kerala created a unique album called 'Beauty in the Shadows'. They named it after a poem titled Beauty in Shadows that was written by Kottoor Radhakrishnan. The album included 20 songs by poets who are associated with the northern region. They explained the origin of the poem in the lyrics, while Kottoor Radhakrishnan explained its meaning in his own words. The initial albums have become very popular not only locally, but also all over India. This proved that people are dying to hear new songs by Malayalam poets while listening to music. So they started composing more songs under this theme and calling it 'Beauty in Shadows'. There are many different kinds of songs in Malayalam films. The melody and the lyrics of Malayalam film songs mainly depend on the theme and mood of the movie. The most common themes in Malayalam film songs are love, patriotism, charity, comedy and friendship. However, some songs exclusively focus on one or two themes and its lyrics depend on the topic. For example: Aiye Mumbai mydala (Aiye Mumbai mydala), Ennu Jennu Oru Kadannu (Kottu Pookkal), Avan Meyulla (Sethubavum Anushyan) etc Various artists sing different kinds of songs in Malayalam films. 5cfa1e7782028
